What is a gene?

Gene Structure

Genes are formed by a coding unit that contains information for the transcription and translation into a protein. On either side of the coding sequence are regions that are not translated into proteins but they often play an important role in gene expression. The most important region is the promoter because it contains most of the information that determines when and where a gene is expressed.
